UNA UNA ISLAND

The Heart of the Togean Islands

Una Una is one of the 66 Islands of the Togean Islands archipelago, located in Central Sulawesi in the center of Tomini Bay, only 17 km south from the Equator. All of the Togean Islands are part of a Natural Park.

This remote island paradise is the perfect getaway destination for people who loves nature. Una Una’s nature offers you untouched forests, volcanic pits and beautiful beaches. Una Una’s uniqueness are the black sandy beaches, which in combination with coconut trees offer you the best tropical island sensation.

Una Una has three villages, Kololio, Tanjun Pude and Una Una village, which is located 2 km from the Sanctum Resort. Best way to reach the village is by foot so you can enjoy the pure nature that the island has to offer.

The first thing you pass is the Mosque which is the symbol of Una Una Island. It is an oldest mosque in Central Sulawesi (built in 1804) and still holds the original architecture from Ironwood. The Mosque was the only building that wasn’t damaged by the 1983 eruption of Volcano Colo.

When you walk further you will find little shops which are selling snacks and some of them have cold drinks to enjoy. You will pass the school building before reaching the heart of the village – the football field in the centre of the village, which is a very important place for the villagers. They gather every friday afternoon to play football, which you are more than welcome to also join while you are staying with us. Villagers are very welcoming and they are always very happy to include you in the game and talk to you. Of course you can also come only to watch the game.

History of the island

Una Una’s name is coming from language of Malay and it means Coconuts. It is the island of million coconut trees, which is the main export of the island and has been transported directly to Malaysia back in the days. That’s why Una Una island had also Malaysian Ringgit instead of Indonesian Rupiah. This is the reason why Una Una got its nick name Ringgit Island. Una Una’s coconuts are still the number one export. Nowadays they are exported to the mainland to Ampana.
