Una Una Mangrove and Tree Restoration

Sanctum Una Una Mangrove Restoration Program started in 2020 when we received the permission papers from the Una Una town office. With the help from Togean Conservation Foundation, local town officers and Lauren’s Indo Ocean Project, we have been able to gain knowledge, be able to select the right locations for the restoration areas and creating a system into this project.

What we do:

Mangrove seeds are collected from local beaches and the areas where the mangrove seeds fall from the trees. Seeds are collected by the Sanctum staff and local villagers and then placed into a nursery in Sanctum. After a few months of care in the nursery, the seedlings are ready to plant into selected locations around Una Una Island with local volunteers.

Learings:

This program teaches the basic knowledge of the mangroves and importance of the forrest restoration. Mangroves can effectively protect the island from waves and erosion. Showing locals and volunteers the basics of seed collection, nursing and replanting in the selected locationsm givs them basic knowledge of the mangroves for the future.
